Autism and Essential Oils

Autism, a word that many have heard, but few know about except if you’re a parent of a child with autism. As you know every child on the autism spectrum is unique and has varying degrees of impairment and manifestations of this condition. And taking care of a child with autism brings a wide array of challenges, as well as special gifts.

I believe the biggest challenge is to understand what your child goes through and experiences and to be able to support them in a natural and holistic way so they and you can cope with these stressors.

A natural and holistic approach can be the use of essential oils as a means of bringing some calm to your child and into your life so you may experience more joy and happiness and less stress.

As with any treatment some will work better than others or not work at all as each child is an individual with their own unique challenges and every essential oil is unique and can have a different effect on an individual and their specific ailment.

If you are not familiar with essential oils allow me to provide you with some insights. Essential oils are naturally occurring, volatile aromatic compounds found in the seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants. They can be both beautifully and powerfully fragrant giving plants their distinctive smells. These essential oils protect plants and play a role in plant pollination.

Most essential oils are extracted from a plant through steam distillation, except for citrus plants, which use cold pressing to extract the essence from the rind.

Essential oils have been used for thousands of years in various cultures for medicinal and health purposes. You may be familiar with Frankincense and Myrrh, which was given to baby Jesus by the three wise men.

Their uses range from aromatherapy, to household cleaning products, personal beauty care and natural medicinal treatments. Their benefits come from their antioxidant, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties and act as a natural treatment without any side effects. Many of the oils produced by doTERRA can be used aromatically, topically and internally. All doTERRA oils are Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade.

Many people are familiar with essentials oils because they are so often associated with spas, or used by massage therapists during a therapy session. But did you know essential oils could be beneficial for children on the autism spectrum and ADHD as well? Essential oils can penetrate the skin and cross the brain-blood barrier to reach the amygdala and other limbic parts of the brain that control our mood and emotions. This is perhaps one of the reasons essential oils for ADHD and autism are gaining in popularity these days.

While essential oils have a myriad of uses I’ve listed just a few general benefits.

  • Support healthy body functions and help boost the immune system.
  • Relieve discomfort and sore muscles after exercising.
  • Soothe the digestive system. Peppermint and DigestZen are known to support the healthy function of your stomach and digestive organs.
  • Enhance a massage.
  • Boost your ability to focus and concentrate.
  • Help you relax and reduce your stress levels.
  • Can alleviate insomnia and help you sleep better.
  • Provide safer, non-toxic ways to clean and purify both home and work spaces.

Some specific essential oils that have proven to balance brain waves are vetiver. While lavender oil has been shown to calm the body and frankincense supports neurological development.

Other natural treatments can be the inclusion of certain foods such as:

  • Additive Free/Unprocessed
  • Bone Broth
  • Poultry
  • Probiotics
  • Fish

Additional natural treatments to consider are:

  • Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
  • Chelation Detox
  • Zinc
  • Vitamin D
  • Glutathione
  • l-Glutamine

In the Epoch Times an article titled, “Parents Say Essential Oils Help With Autism,” by Conan Milner she stated, “One treatment that’s been getting a lot of attention is essential oils. A growing number of parents claim that these chemically complex plant-based compounds can help ease their child’s anxiety and restlessness, and can even curtail an epic meltdown. (see the full article here:

Shannon Coconis, whose 12 year old son has ASD said, “I didn’t think I was seeing anything after the first month,” she said. “Then I ran out of the two oils I was using and all of sudden he started going crazy. The only thing I could figure was that he didn’t have his oils. We got back to the oils and his behavior improved.”

“Oils are so easy. If there is something as easy as breathing and that can affect your behavior, your mood and affect metabolically things that are going on inside the body, that’s a win-win because you’re not fighting your child at all.”

As of November 2015 Dr. Jill Hollway, a research scientist at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, and her team of investigators began assembling a randomized, double-blind study to see if essential oils actually do help with the emotional and behavioral challenges associated with ASD.

Previous studies have shown that specific essential oils may improve children’s cognitive function, and some oils performed this task better than others. Perhaps the most famous is Dr. Terry Friedmann’s two-year case study, which looked at children diagnosed with ADD/ADHD. Friedmann found that regular inhalation of vetiver oil for 30 days improved brain wave patterns, scholastic performance, and behavior patterns in all subjects. Cedarwood oil demonstrated improvement for 80 percent of subjects, and lavender showed improvement for only five percent. However, lavender may be a better fit for ASD. Several of the parents OSU talked to confirmed that lavender oil was able to relax their child prior to bedtime.

Be Whealthy

I remember a time when individuals took an active role in their wellness and the health care system wasn’t so broken and costly.

I remember a time when there weren’t medications and vaccines for every little illness because they weren’t needed.

I remember a time when most of the food we ate wasn’t laced with pesticides and toxins (GMOs).

I remember a time when we could afford to go to a doctor without insurance (some even came to us).

I remember a time… do you remember?

As I get older the “good old days” seem to be the “better old days.” And I remember those years as if it were just yesterday. I’m sure it’s the same for every generation.

We keep increasing the number of medications and vaccines and inventing new health problems. There are more acronyms for potential ailments than there are actual health problems.  Pharmaceutical companies have us worrying about every little tick, twitch or itch because they have invented a supposed new cure or at least a new coverup of a symptom. We don’t have well care system because it’s more profitable to have a sick care system.

We have come to a time of relying on a broken system to fix us and we don’t seem to want to fix ourselves as well.

We have come to a time of non-responsibility for our actions of trying to keep ourselves well.

We have come to a time where we believe that our sick care system is the norm and is the answer.

We have come to a time where our food is laced with toxins and chemicals and mostly inedible, and non-nourishing.

We have come to a time where we’re always in work mode and don’t take time to rest.

We have come to a time where we don’t exercise, get the right nutrition, or take enough responsibility for our health.

We have come to a time where life expectancy is now getting shorter.

Our sick care system is so broken that it is 10 times more expensive to fix us than to support our ongoing good health by using prevention techniques, having a well care system in place. Of the dozens of health conditions we experience here’s just one example of the costs associated with diabetes just in the U.S.

Approximately 16.5 million people (5% of the population) have diabetes. The average “Direct” cost of care for a diabetic is $17,200 a year, which amounts to about $300 billion a year. Add that to the “Indirect” costs totaling $85.7 billion for a staggering total of $386 billion. And that’s just diabetes!

Here’s a breakdown of direct and indirect costs:

Direct Costs:
o Hospital inpatient care (43%) $143 billion
o Prescription medications to treat complications of diabetes (59.8%) $60
o Anti-diabetic agents and diabetes supplies (12%) $39.9 billion
o Physician office visits (9%) $29.9 billion
o Nursing/residential facility stays (8%) $26.6 billion

Indirect Costs:
o Increased absenteeism ($6.5 billion)
o Reduced productivity while at work ($26.8 billion) for the employed population
o Reduced productivity for those not in the labor force ($33 billion)
o Inability to work as a result of disease-related disability ($27.6 billion)
o Lost productive capacity due to early mortality ($23.8 billion).

With a small investment in prevention the Urban Institute concludes that the incidence of diabetes and hypertension could easily be reduced by 5 percent, that’s about $20 billion. I know with the proper programs and education we can do better.

Isn’t it time to help stop the madness and seriously take charge of your own self-care for yourself and others?

Isn’t it time to insist that all companies produce foods that have flavor and are natural and organic?

Isn’t it time to insist on a health care system doing what’s needed to prevent illness and it becomes the appropriate way all health care systems operate?

Isn’t it time to insist that insurance programs pay for well care such as chiropractic, massages, acupuncture, gyms, essential oils, and natural supplements so we are get sick less often if at all, are more productive, happier and THRIVING?

Isn’t it time for you be curious about, understand and be active in your health care?

It is time to get educated about natural remedies, understand the side affects of medications.

It is time to know your numbers and the average numbers of lab tests so you don’t create other problems while trying to fix your current problem.

It is time to eat quality foods, get the proper rest and exercise.

Doing these things can help you live longer, earn more, save more and be there for your family. If you don’t care that much about your health your family may because they need you and you need to be there for them, I hope.

Let’s have a“Whealth Care” system. It’s a lot less less expensive and more effective for you and us.

Can You Hear Me?

Right now are your reading this or are you really somewhere else?  Are you thinking about something from your past or thinking about what you need or want to do next, or later today, or next week, or next month? Somehow you believe, whether it is technology or something in your DNA, that you have the ability to multi-task and have a very difficult time staying in the moment.  It’s amazing at times that you actually hear or listen to anything that’s being said and based on commercials it takes getting loud, obnoxious and annoying to get your attention.

Do you know that listening is an acquired skill and that there are courses in listening.  Right now, as you read this your mind is trying to distract you. It’s saying things like, you have so much to do just get through this and get on to the next thing.  You are constantly contemplating so many other things and so easily distracted. Unless this subject really intrigues you, you may or may not even finish reading it.  Even if you do will you have digested the information and use it to your benefit in the future?

Now, if you really want to get ethereal you will want to pay attention to everything that comes into your life because it came to you for a reason.  Unfortunately, unless you listen you’ll never discover why this article came to you, or why I was the person who wrote it, or what the meaning of this message is for you, or what you need to learn from it. Sound cryptic?  Not really, you see even when I am writing there is a message here for me as well. Think about it, contemplate it, and find the message.

So be in the present and pay attention because it is a gift (present) and it is this very moment in time that you want to experience.  It is a gift of life where you have 86,400 seconds in every day to use, choose want you want to do.  By living in the present, in this very moment it not only shapes your future, it can provide you with a “no regrets” past.

So tell me how do you handle the present?  Are you present or not?  Are you listening or being distracted? Did this resonate with you?  Will you be more aware the next time you read, watch or listen to something or someone? I’d love to hear your thoughts and I promise to pay attention and you don’t have to yell.

Yesterday, I had an opportunity to watch an 18-minute video by Jill Bolte Taylor.  It’s an incredibly moving and insightful video by a person who had a stroke, but not just any person, she is a brain scientist and researcher.  This started my thinking here. Are we a being and are we being?

There is so much to life and to do in life. We have to think about and do our daily chores, go to work, care for family, earn money and it goes on and on. Rarely do we sit and contemplate our lives or life itself.  You know, really think about who we are, what we do, why we do it, how we relate to others, why are we here, what’s our role, etc., etc.  Most of the time we think about how we are going to pay the bills, save for retirement, what’s for breakfast, lunch or dinner, when we will make time for chores, or seeing friends or being with our significant other and of course it goes on and on.  Even in our daily routines, we are usually living in the past or the future and rarely, if ever living in the present.

There’s a wonderful story about life being like a train ride.  You make plans to see some one in another town and you decide to take the train from your town to theirs.  It’s a long ride with many stops in between.  At those stops you could get off for a while and see what’s there and have that experience.  But all you think about is when you’re going to arrive at your final destination, because at you final destination you will see your friend and be happy.  Well we sort of live our life this way, don’t we?  If we’re not thinking about the problems of the past or how the past affects our daily lives, we are thinking about the future and how things will be better when we reach that future date.  When my kids are grown I’ll be able to do what I want.  When I finish school I’ll be able to start a career.  When this week is over I’ll be free this weekend to go boating or just relax.  I think you get my point.  We are rarely living in the present.  And what is the present?  It is exactly that, a present, a gift.  It is in this moment that we are creating the past and the future.  It is this moment that if we do not live it fully, appreciate it, discover in it, use it and be happy in it that we loose it, always waiting for the next moment that will be better and when we will be happy. If we live each moment with joy, if we at least learn to appreciate each moment, if we make each moment count and are happy in this moment, then there is no unhappy past and we don’t have to think about the better future because whatever the future is we will be happy just as we are now.  Can you now answer; are you being?

Jill Bolte Taylor’s story is about how we are all connected.  You see our left hemisphere of the brain holds the all the information we have learned from birth so we can learn how to walk and talk, read and write, and go about our daily routines, etc.  The right brain is all about the here and now, it is not just our artistic side but connects us to the rest of the universe, kinesthetically.  Our right hemisphere is our sensory side, processing all of the information from sights, sounds and more and thinks in color and smells and touch. It connects us to every atom not just in our bodies, but also to other beings.  It connects us!  Meaning we are all connected to one another, physically and spiritually.  Yes, each atom of your body is connected to the atoms in the air and water, which are connected to everything air and water touches, which is you and me, and plants and tress, and birds and animals, and mountains and land, and rivers and oceans, and, and everything. If we did not have a left hemisphere just as Jill lost from a brain tumor, which is why she could not communicate, or walk, we would be the spiritual beings we really are without having a human experience.

So are we being or not being?  We are human beings, being who we are, but not being all we can be.  Being, what a concept.  Don’t just contemplate your day, live your day.  I guarantee that if you start it with a smile and you give that smile to everyone you meet it will be a start of living in the moment.  And if you actually appreciate each moment by living in the present you are given and doing at least one thing that you love you will have a past with no regrets and the future will take care of itself.

So I ask you, “How do you eat an elephant?”  Well, it’s one piece at a time. That’s the way to start living.  One minute at a time, one hour at a time, one day at a time. Yes, we are in human form and the daily routines can take us off the path and make it hard to live spiritually. Think about who you are underneath this human form. You are a spirit.  So, if you can remember this only once a day in the beginning of your new spiritual self and use it only once when faced with a decision of being happy or sad, to be happy or instead of reacting badly acting lovingly, then it is a step in the right direction.  Being right, really means being in the right hemisphere of love and connection.

Love the Only Answer

So the first question I asked myself is why now? Why am I presenting this material to you?  Well, just like Neale Donald Walsh (Conversations with God series) and many of you, I’m having one of my many conversations with God, and I understood it was time.

I have had a passion for speaking and presenting for decades.  And although I’ve done it for corporations I’ve never done it for myself, for my passion, and I wasn’t sure what to speak about.  I mean there is so much in this universe of knowledge to share, so where do I begin, what resonates for me?  I have been on a spiritual path for decades and it seems oh such a slow process, but then again now that I have finally reached the place I need to be, it really has gone by quickly.

My heart has finally truly opened up and found a place for everyone.  To put aside judgments, to put aside petty issues, to put aside blaming and to know true love.  Often I have said that there are only a few things that everyone wants in this life and that is love, shelter, and food.  When you think about it that’s all there really is.  Of course there are different forms of love and ways of feeling love.  Like love for a parent, or love for a child, or love for a significant other, or a friend, or someone that needs help, but love is really Love.  In it’s purest form it is to give with an open heart all the universe has to offer.  It is to open your arms to everyone and anyone who needs you.  I know you see this.  For in giving look how much you receive.  You get that love back ten, a hundred, a thousand fold; actually it is immeasurable. And regarding shelter and food, well that resonates differently for each of us, whether you want a small place in the woods, or a place on the beach, a palatial estate or just a tent.  And of course food, wow, most of us would love to eat everything and anything available the choices and combinations are unfathomable.

As I write this there is interference from my ego, this is what we call monkey chatter.  Questions about why me, why do I have the right to present this to you?  Does this put me above others? Yet I truly know that what I am presenting to you is from love and only want all of us to realize, to understand that we are the same, we are the same, we are the same.  Think, right now, right this second about whom you are.  Feel deep down into your soul and feel the love and compassion you have for someone else.  Perhaps it’s just one or two others, or perhaps it’s for a small circle of people, but you know that it can be bigger.  How many times have you seen other people in distress and you wanted to reach out and help and you did.  You didn’t know them, but you knew you wanted to do something to help, didn’t you.  You could do that everyday and every minute for yourself and everyone around you.

Think about how you act and react now to those closest to you.  Your family, your friends, your co-workers etc.  Now I want you to take a deep breath, a very deep breath and look around you.  Look at the person next to you, behind you, in front of you, and all around you.  You have judgments about each of them without realizing it most of the time.  In ten seconds you have sized them up and made decisions about who they are and whether you like, or could like, them or not.  Why do we do this?  We do this out of fear.  Fear of not knowing, not knowing if they will like you, if they will hurt you physically or financially, if they don’t physically measure up to your standards and more.  They are so different from me, how can we be compatible. Whatever the reason, STOP! Stop the judging! Just because you don’t know them doesn’t make them bad, it only makes them different.

I’m not a religious person, in the sense of believing in one secular organization who believes that their belief about God or a God or Gods is the true way to think and be.  And Because I don’t have a particular religious belief doesn’t mean that I believe that religious organizations are bad, they may help many see the light.  Whatever light that is, as long as it doesn’t harm, disparage, denigrate or cast aspersions on someone else. Believing that you see the light is great, but the key is being the light.  Each of us has a piece of the light, each of us is light and it is the light in each of us that makes the universe shine. We are God and God is us.

If you think about the basics again, that is the basics of what we need, love, shelter and food, why do we need millions of laws. There are so many laws made by man it’s impossible not to be outside of them at sometime.  You see there are only a few basic laws that if we adhere to them make all the other laws un-necessary; they are: don’t lie, don’t cheat, don’t steal, and don’t hurt another physically or verbally.  There are ten in the commandments and basically they say the same thing with a few more about not having any other Gods, etc.  Again, I say I am not placing one religion over another because of what and how they believe for what you believe now is right for you.  Just don’t allow your beliefs to interfere with someone else’s beliefs. Imagine that we all get along by my not trying to make you believe the way I do.  Yes, it’s comforting to know that we have similar thoughts, because we all really want to be like everyone else that we see as normal, which makes us normal, but we don’t have to.  We are all normal and abnormal depending on who views us.  If we allow others to live as they wish within the laws of don’t lie, don’t cheat, don’t steal, and don’t hurt another physically or verbally, then how can anything go wrong.  Wow, do you think it’s possible? Some will say it’s utopian, but why not go for the gusto. Just think about if you and someone else were the first people on this earth; what would you do?  Of course you would be Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie or vice versa.  Now that’s probably heaven.  But you see, even with my saying this someone out there is saying why them how about Joe Blow and Sandra Smith or Sandra Smith and Betty Wilson or Joe Blow and Mike Wilson (no relationship to Betty).  What I’m getting at is that it’s okay to be different just don’t try to make everyone else be like you.  It’s the differences and allowing the differences that make our world go round. It’s how we learn and create and improve.  Our differences create wondrous things. Be who you want to be and let others be who they want to be.  Give love openly and receive love without question. And begin creating a new wonderful life for yourself and do the things your passionate about.  Life is really too short to do anything else.  Be love and be happy.  Now smile and share it with everyone you see.

With love and abundance,
